Commissioning Lacquer Art - Ink in Lacquer II

Our artist Mine Tanigawa was commissioned by Shangri-la Qiantan Hotel in Shanghai to create a series of wall pieces simulating brush strokes. To simulate brush strokes, Mine Tanigawa uses fibre-reinforced plastic to create the substrate that makes her pieces look as if they are made with just lacquer and nothing else. Translucent “burgundy red” colour is achieved by layers of lacquer and when each is oxidised and polished, in between additional layers of red colour have to be applied. It is yet to be finished until numerous times of polishing to create a satisfying effect.
