Lacquer requires the careful nurturing of tree farmers, and we aim to create a model close to "from farm to table." In this way, lacquer artists become more than just craftsmen; like chefs who understand the source of their ingredients, they value every step of the process. The result is not only a piece of art to admire but also functional items that can be enjoyed and experienced in daily life.


In this exhibition “Eternity", we explore the use of sustainable and eco-friendly materials. Our philosophy is to breathe new life into natural resources. For instance, corn husks, commonly found in daily life, serve as the protective layer of the corn. After use, they are often seen as waste. We extend their protective function by applying corn husks to the surface of our creations, adding a layer of natural durability.


When wood is used, the bark is stripped away, losing its protective role for the tree. We collect this bark and use its unique texture as a new form of expression, representing not just reuse but a new beginning for the bark itself.


These efforts reflect our belief that the journey from consumption to change to creation can be sustainable. We hope to imbue each piece with a sense of lasting significance, like the blessings of spring, symbolizing the cycle and continuation of life.


大漆需要樹農的精心照料,我們希望實現近乎「從農場到餐桌」的模式,讓漆藝人不再僅僅是工匠,正如廚師不只是懂得烹飪,而是深入理解食材的來源,重視每一個製作過程。這樣,成品不僅是觀賞的藝術品,更是可供享用和感受的日常器物。


在這次展覽「Eternity 生生不息」中,我們對可持續使用的環保材料進行了深入的思考與嘗試。我們的理念是利用自然界中的原材料,重新賦予其生命。  例如玉米皮是一種在日常生活、農作品常見的,它原本是玉米的保護衣,然而在使用後往往被視為沒有用處。我們將其保護的功能延續下來,將玉米皮裱於器物表面,為其增添一層自然的保護皮,使之更為耐用。


如每次使用木材時,剝落的樹皮失去保護樹木的功能。我們收集了這些樹皮,利用其獨特的肌理再重新呈現,讓材料再次「回春」,帶來新生的機會。


這一連串的嘗試體現了我們的信念:從消耗到改變,再到創造的過程都是可持續的。我們希望賦予每一件作品萬物永續的意義,如春天的祝福,象徵著生命的循環與延續。

Li Chuanyi, born in Chaozhou, China, and raised in Hong Kong, obtained her Bachelor's degree from the Department of Lacquer at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2019. She moved to Beijing in 2020. In 2021, Li Chuanyi established a studio with her partner, Guo Zhangle, in Beijing to promote lacquer art that adds depth to daily life. Guo is a veteran artisan who has been practicing lacquer craft since 2012.


Their vision is to rejuvenate lacquer art by integrating sustainable materials into traditional craftsmanship. This approach not only respects the heritage of lacquer-making but also paves the way for a new wave of functional, environmentally friendly, and durable lacquerware.


This lacquerware series reflects their commitment to exploring innovative materials and techniques. By delving into traditional craftsmanship, they stimulate fresh ideas that lead to unconventional designs. This process results in pieces that are not only beautiful but also sustainable, ensuring that the art of lacquerware remains relevant in today’s world.


李釧毅 郭章樂


李釧毅出生於中國潮州,成長於香港。她於2019年在四川美術學院獲得漆藝系的學士學位。2020年李釧毅移居北京,在2021年與合作夥伴郭章樂在北京成立了工作室,目標是要為日常生活制作出具深度的漆藝器物。  郭章樂是一位資深工匠,自2012年以來一直從事漆藝製作。


為了復興漆藝,他們研究把可持續的材料融入傳統工藝。這不僅要尊重漆藝的傳承,還要為具功能、可環保和耐用的漆物開創新路向。


這次展覽上的漆物體現了他們對探索創新材料和技術的承諾。在深入研究傳統工藝的過程中,他們發揮創意,致力設計。這些作品不僅美觀,還具備可持續性,確保漆藝在當今世界中不會過時。

Searching for lacquer trees in the mountains is akin to tracing the origins of lacquerware, immersing us in the growth environment of these trees and allowing us to explore the traces of lacquer.

去山中尋找漆樹像是一場漆器生命的溯源,感受漆樹的生長環境,探索漆的痕跡。



As lacquerware makers, we take meticulous care in selecting materials for each piece. When choosing lacquer, we consider variations in temperature and rainfall.

作為漆器作者,對材料的嚴格把控是我們對每一件作品的責任。

在選擇漆時,我們會根據氣溫和雨水的變化加以考量。



Our partners process the raw lacquer using traditional methods, including filtering, stirring with double paddles, and heating with infrared lamps.

我們的合作夥伴在拿到生漆後,會進行加工,通過古法過濾、雙槳攪拌與紅外燈加熱進行調製。



Whether it’s the stripes of corn husks, the textures of tree bark, or the fabric patterns and rough gray markings on the bowls, these natural elements are infused into our vessels through lacquer.

無論是玉米皮的條紋、樹皮的凹凸,還是椀上的布紋和粗糙的灰紋,

這些自然的痕跡都透過漆的媒介融入器皿中,希望使用者在使用過程中能與自然產生共鳴。

漆椀系列


In daily life, selecting the appropriate lacquer bowl is essential for fully appreciating Chinese cuisine. Each type of lacquer bowl serves specific needs and contexts, creating an important connection between its design and the user. The shallow lacquer bowl is ideal for dishes like rice or congee, which benefit from rapid cooling. Its design facilitates quick heat dissipation, enhancing the dining experience.

在日常生活中,選擇合適的漆椀型對於中餐的享用至關重要。每一款漆椀都有其特定的需求和使用場景,這種設計與使用者之間的連接非常重要。 淺漆椀則更適合米飯或粥等需快速散熱的食物。其設計有助於食物迅速降溫,方便食用。


The noodle lacquer bowl is crafted with consideration for its potential to become hot due to abundant broth. As a result, these bowls typically feature thickened bottoms for improved grip and safety.

在麵漆椀的設計中,考慮到湯多且容易燙手的特性,這類漆椀的底部通常會加厚,

以提供更好的抓握感和保護。

The Gallery by SOIL is dedicated to presenting the art of lacquer from Asia. It is probably the first gallery in Hong Kong which brings together lacquer masters and artists of diverse cultures, blending the traditional with the contemporary to showcase variety in the discipline.
