Mr Wakamiya will be with us in person to share his experiences and insights on the art of Hikoju Makie and the ongoing fundraising efforts for its revival after the recent devastating earthquake.

About the Event:

The event aims to shed light on the profound impact of the earthquake on the renowned lacquer art community in Wajima. Mr. Takashi Wakamiya, a highly respected lacquer artist and a key figure in the Hikoju Makie atelier, will take the stage to discuss the challenges faced by the artisans and the importance of preserving their unique craft. Through his personal stories and artistic journey, Mr. Wakamiya will provide valuable insights into the exquisite art of Hikoju Makie, its historical significance, and the techniques involved. He will also share the heart-wrenching aftermath of the earthquake, the loss and destruction suffered by the artisans, and their determination to rebuild their lives and continue creating magnificent lacquer art pieces.

Members of Hikoju Makie will conduct a live demonstration during the event.

Mr. Wakamiya will provide information about the ongoing fundraising efforts to support the revival of Hikoju Makie. Donations received will be used to rebuild the living and working environments of the artisans, procure essential tools and materials, and ensure the operation of the atelier. The aim is to provide the artisans with hope and the means to continue their craft, preserving the rich heritage of Wajima's lacquer art.

HIKOJU MAKIE - Art Director

Takashi Wakamiya

Master Takashi Wakamiya, an acclaimed artist, excels in the practice of traditional lacquer techniques with a high level of precision. He has developed an interest in East Asian objects, historically made from unrelated materials, such as bronze or ceramic, and executing them in lacquer. Master Wakamiya and his team Hikoju Makie in Wajima, Japan creates these imitations with such remarkable exactness that onlookers are fooled by the medium. Much more than the creation of a decorative surface, the sculptural forms and superbly nuanced colours make three-dimensional lacquer artefacts that are second to none.

In 2014, Master Wakamiya received the Grand Prize of The Ishikawa International Urushi Exhibition. In the same year, he was appointed by the Agency for Cultural Affairs as Japan Cultural Envoy. Over the years, he exhibited extensively in the UK, France and China including a major one at the University Museum and Art Gallery of The University of Hong Kong in 2016. His works were chosen to become permanent collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, UK and Museum of Lacquer Art in Münster, Germany.

若宮隆志

若宮隆志與他的工房「彥十蒔繪」不單致力復興傳統漆藝技法，更力求創新，他尤其喜歡硏究東亞文物和美學，如古畫丶青銅器或陶瓷器皿等往往都賦予他靈感，然後他會再重新演譯，加以精湛的漆藝製作出幾可亂真丶似重若輕丶令人驚喜的作品。

若宮先生曾於2014榮獲國際漆藝界最⾼榮譽《⽯川國際漆展》⼤賞，同年受⽇本⽂化廳任命為⽂化交流⼤使，經常到訪英、法、中等地推廣漆文化。在2016年於香港大學美術博物館舉⾏個展。英國倫敦V&A博物館、德國明斯特漆藝博物館都有收藏其作品。

14.3.2024 Kanazawa

The Noto Peninsula Earthquake was a significant seismic event that struck the Ishikawa Prefecture on January 1, 2024. It caused widespread damage and disruption, forcing many residents, including the staff of the Hikoju Makie team, to flee their homes and workplaces.

It is heartening to hear that despite the initial scattering of the Hikoju Makie team, they were able to maintain close contact and support one another through this difficult time. The March 14th gathering must have been an emotionally charged and meaningful reunion for the team. The feeling of "rebirth after the disaster" is a common sentiment in the aftermath of such events. It reflects their capacity to find hope and purpose even in the face of adversity.

The expressed determination of the team to "inherit the lacquer art and revive the industry" is admirable. For the Hikoju Makie team to reaffirm their commitment to preserving and advancing this art form in the wake of such a disaster is a testament to their resilience and passion.

在1月1日的「令和6年能登半島地震」後，彥十蒔絵的工作職人夥伴各自逃難，分散於石川線縣各地，慶幸彥十蒔絵團隊保持密切聯繫，若宮隆志先生和高禎蓮女士在災後一直關心著職人們的情況與動向，3月14日那天，是職人團隊是第一次在災後再次團聚，難免有「刦後重生」的感覺，可以再次交談與關懷來安慰大家受創的心靈，但大家也更堅定地表達要承傳漆藝、持續製作的決心。

The substrate is made from beech wood. The woodturning process can only take place after a process of natural drying and smoke drying, which takes at least four years. The wooden body is coated with natural lacquer plus different materials such as Wajima ground powder, ash powder, and charcoal powder for multiple-base coats, and then a high-quality top coat is applied to complete the surface coating. The bottom part of the tea bowl, which looks like dripping glaze, is expressed using the taka (raised) maki-e technique. The oil-spots are painted by using a makie brush and using lacquer to draw the oil droplets one by one, then sprinkling silver powder on them and polishing them to create a glossy finish. The gold rim around the edge of the tea bowl is an expression of the makie decoration using pure gold powder.

茶盞胎體使用的是櫸木，經過自然乾燥與煙燻乾燥後，使用轆轤刨削製作成型，光是木胎的製作就費時4年。木胎上以天然生漆加上輪島地粉、砥粉、炭粉等不同的材料進行多次的底層塗布後，再塗上優質的上塗漆完成表面的塗層。茶椀底部如釉藥垂滴般的效果，則是運用高蒔絵來表現。油滴部分是使用蒔絵毛筆，沾取蒔絵漆將油滴模樣一個個畫出來，然後灑上銀粉並研磨出光澤來繪製。茶椀的蒔絵金邊是使用純金粉。

A court carriage, as depicted in various senses of The Tales of Genji, was used by people of high status and a symbol of the elegant Heian nobles. This container was made for placing incense inside.

This work looks like bronze, but is actually made of wooden lacquer. The shape is an imaginary animal shape based on the Chinese Tapir-Shape (Xijun) , and the element of an incense burner is added. The text on the body is etched using a Chinkin knife. It takes many years for the team to research and develop this imitating-bronze technique. The body of the work can be used as a wine vessel, which can be displayed and used separately from the incense burner.

這個作品看似青銅器，但其實是木製的漆器。造型是以中國的犧尊為藍本加以想像的動物造型，並且加置了香爐的元素。身體上的饕餮文是使用沈金刀刻出來的紋路。此青銅塗法是彥十蒔絵研究多年的心血結晶品。犧尊本體是酒器，與身上的香爐可以分開來擺設與使用。

This holder is made of high quality beech wood that has been fully smoked and dried as the substrate. It is beautifully carved to create the petal shape. Seido-nuri is a technique that adds an aged look to the piece, making it look as if it was made from bronze a long time ago.

此盞托是使用質地良好經過充分煙燻乾燥過後的櫸木為胎底，以雕刻刀造出輪花瓣的形狀，塗漆後再施以有顏色的漆粉，讓整體看似如同出土的青銅器。

Astro Boy, known in Japan by its original name Mighty Atom is a manga series illustrated by Osamu Tezuka. This “Astro Boy” Netsuke is the only lacquer-wooden edition which comes with a certificate. Netsuke were used as practical toggles for suspending everyday items from a man’s sash (since the traditional male kimono had no pockets).

這根付的造型是來自日本漫畫「原子小金剛」(Astro boy) 中的主角（香港版稱為小飛俠阿童木）。根付是往日男性穿著和服時配戴的飾物，現已成為古玩的收藏品。取得畫家手塚治蟲的原創公司認證製作，是世界獨一無二的木漆塗蒔絵根付。附有專業認證的標記。

Craftsmen tap the sap from lacquer tree and apply lacquer to the wooden body to give it a new life. When a wooden bowl is made, it will be used by human in every life. We use this lacquerware as if we experience the meaning of reincarnation of life.

職人們採割漆樹上的樹漆，並將大漆塗佈於木胎上為其添妝，使這被砍下來的木材得到新的生命，再由人類在生活中使用。越使用這個器皿就越能體驗生命輪迴再生的意義。
