Nan Wei was inspired by the sculptural lacquer creation in Japan, which demonstrates that lacquer art could be a progressive medium. She learns about employing non-traditional techniques, such as using leather instead of only wood or cloth as a substrate, to create innovative conceptual works that respect the material’s natural qualities. Her Chinese background has offered her sets of beliefs and a sense of aesthetics which she incorporates into her creations. There are a lot of subconscious influences in the process that she does not necessarily think about beforehand.
