Xipi is one of the unique decoration techniques in the Chinese art of lacquer, which literally means 'rhinoceros skin'. This technique involved the application of layers of different colours of lacquer over uneven ground. It is then polished so that the different colours appear in a marbled pattern over the surface of the vessel.
